Inspiration
I'm fascinated by materials curled by the effect of time, boasting the articulation of use and wear from life past. Its beauty is so rich. I recreate this look of aging afresh, in food ironically, abusing my decorative sugar surfaces with a delicate hand, pushing the sugar's potential for that richness beyond what I've previously known or seen, forging textures that play with light and shadow. Each cake shows me something new.
What does ‘magic’ mean to you?
For me, it can be whimsical, organic, surprising, or even austere—a diaphanous wisp of rice paper or a chemical explosion of sugar. It reverberates and touches me at any moment, in a variety of unexpected forms, enlivening even the softest moments with a gentle sparkle. I want to nurture it in all aspects of my life, and it’s an important part of my work. I want to convey it in the piece I create for you, just as I want you to experience the downy of magic in the culmination of all your planning and anticipation.
